"Aikido is just applied physics - applied on people!"

I started Shodokan Aikido in 2007 when I started my theoretical physics course at the University of Sheffield. I trained essentially every day Monday-Saturday for the best part of my four years at uni!

I won the Student Nationals in Edinburgh in 2009, and went to Japan for the first time for the world championships that same year as part of the student team – didn’t do as well there! But over time I have trained hard, and performed well at many competitions. I captained the main UK team in Japan in 2013, and won a European competition in Geneva 2015.

But competition is just a small part of Shodokan Aikido – the sport is just a game used to improve skills, after all, it’s not the martial arts itself. I graded to 3rd dan at the end of 2014, and continue to train hard and often. As well as developing myself, I am trying to develop coaching practices to help accelerate learning (for myself and others).

Being a grown-up is easier than being a student in some ways, but harder in other ways… Grey hairs, hangovers, and aching joints… but it is definitely worth it!

Ganbatte!
